Museu Histórico Nacional (National Historic Museum)
Forte de Santiago (Fort Santiago) was the original nucleus of the museum’s current headquarters. The architectural complex taken up by the museum brings together two other old buildings: the Casa do Trem (Train House), built to guard the weapons used in the defence of the city and the Arsenal de Guerra (War Arsenal). Opened in 1922 and housing over 264,000 items linked to the national and Rio de Janeiro’s history, the venue occupies the entire complex of remarkably valuable historical buildings. It has the largest numismatic collection in Latin America and preserves traces of the Fort’s wall. Among its permanent exhibitions, the reconstruction of a homeopathic pharmacy with its original furnishings, founded in the city in 1847, stands out.
