Museu de Arqueologia de Itaipu (Itaipu Archaeology Museum)

Created in 1975, the Museu de Arqueologia de Itaipu (Itaipu Archaeology Museum) was installed on top of the ruins of the former house of Recolhimento (Gathering) for women of Santa Teresa, an institution founded in 1764 and created as an alternative lodging for those who planned for a religious career, orphans, non-married pregnant women and women with unacceptable behaviour for the time. By initiative of the community of local fishermen, the process for the building to become listed started and was completed in 1955. Years later, the chapel and the walls - erected from an indigenous technique that mixes stones, shell mounds and whale oil - went through a careful process of restoration. The MAI is located in the complex of the Parque Estadual da Serra da Tiririca (State Park of Serra da Tiririca), in the oceanic region of Niterói. The exhibition room, located in the old chapel of the house, dedicates itself to telling about 8,000 years of history of the region.
