Museu da Misericórdia (Museum of Mercy)
The Museu da Misericórdia (Museum of Mercy) operates at the headquarters of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), a palace of the seventeenth century, located between the Praça da Sé (Cathedral Square) and the Praça Municipal (Town Square), the historic center of Salvador. Opened in 2006, the collection consists of works from the seventeenth century to the present day, highlighting a set of paintings, sculptures, tools and pieces of furniture from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A series of tiles that reproduce the Procissão dos Fogaréus (Procession of Bonfires) - held in Quinta-Feira Santa (Holy Thursday) nights - and the Sala do Definitório (Definitory Room), whose ceiling consists of 15 restored panels of the eighteenth century, are also notorious. The beautiful Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy), part of the architectural ensemble, is a mandatory stop.
