The Museu da Inconfidência (Museum of Inconfidência) opened in August 1944 with the purpose of preserving and disseminating the memory of the Inconfidência Mineira of 1789, name given to the conspiracy of a group against the charge of extra taxes in case the gold extraction did not reach the minimum annual value decreed by Portugal. The museum operates in the former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia de Vila Rica (Prison and City Hall) in Ouro Preto which was the building where public administration and jail operated in the colonial period. The museum carries out a variety of educational, cultural and social inclusion activities. With over four thousand pieces, its collection holds objects of the Minas Gerais universe from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and works of artists such as Antônio Francisco Lisboa, famously known as Aleijadinho.
