Museu da Imagem e do Som do Amazonas
Museu da Imagem e do Som do Amazonas (Museum of Image and Sound of Amazonas)
Opened in 2000, the Museu da Imagem e do Som do Amazonas (Museum of Image and Sound of Amazonas) is based at the Palacete Provincial (Provincial Palace), a historic building from 1874 that is also home to other cultural centers. Aiming to rescue, preserve and disseminate collections of the Amazon region in images, audio and video formats, the museum has about 245,000 items in different media such as photographs, vinyl records, films, newspapers and DVDs. Apart from an exhibition on the Portuguese photographer and filmmaker Silvino Santos (1886-1970) and another exhibit with cameras from different periods, the museum keeps treasures such as a collection of photographs of the region from the second half of the nineteenth century (Albert Frisch Collection).
