Museu da Abolição (Museum of Abolition)
The Museu da Abolição (Museum of Abolition) was created in 1957 and later settled itself in the house Sobrado Grande do Engenho Madalena Gonçalves, nowadays called Madalena District. In the building lived Counselor João Alfredo Correia de Oliveira (1835-1919), whose office presented the project that would become the Lei Áurea (Golden Law), responsible for the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Seeking to preserve, disseminate and cherish the memory, history as well as artistic and cultural values of African-Brazilian people, the museum wants to instigate visitors to think on crucial issues for national social and cultural development, especially on the subject of the abolition of slavery.
