Museu Afro-Brasileiro da Universidade Federal da Bahia (Afro-Brazilian Museum of the Federal University of Bahia)
Devised in 1974 by the anthropologist, ethnologist and French photographer Pierre Verger (1902-1996), the Museu Afro-Brasileiro (Afro-Brazilian Museum) of Salvador was inaugurated in 1982 and is housed in the building of the first medical school in Brazil, at the Terreiro de Jesus (a sacred place for the Candomblé), in the historical centre of the city. Linked to the Universidade Federal da Bahia (Federal University of Bahia) and dedicated to the study and dissemination of African and African-Brazilian culture, the venue encourages visitors to come up with unique reflections on the roots of our culture and society. Among pieces of African origin or inspiration, the fascinating set of 27 panels carved in cedar by artist Carybé, representing the Orixás of the Candomblé from Bahia are unmissable.
